Stage 10

This stage of the investigation is the process of elimination. This is when the police look at all of the evidence and information they have gathered so far and look at what leads this has given them. The purpose of the process of elimination is to eliminate any innocent suspects so that they are ready to prosecute certain suspects.

To complete this procedure correctly the police will need to interview all of the witnesses and take into account all of the forensic evidence found. Looking through all of the information and evidence they have collected throughout the investigation again will help them to be sure they are prosecuting the correct suspect. This is very important as if this stage is not completely correctly, an innocent suspect could be charged with the crime.

In the James Bulger case, the police had the CCTV footage, 38 witness statements stating they seen two young boys with James, the forensic evidence such as fingerprints in The Strand shopping centre that matched Jon Venables (proving Jon was in The Strand on the day James was murdered), the iron bar, bricks and stones that were found with James' blood stains on that matched blood stains on Jon Venables and Robert Thompson's clothing and the blue paint found on James' body that was also found on Jon and Robert's clothing from the day the crime happened. After finding all of this evidence, the police were certain it was Jon and Robert who committed the crime.
