The final stage of the investigation is the report writing and presentation of evidence in court. A report is written containing every single detail of the case, this is to be presented in court. It has to include the person up for conviction and any previous convictions that they may have. The report includes what the crime is, what happened, who was involved, witness statements, items of evidence, the analysis of the evidence. The Crown Prosecution Service will then present the report to the whole of the court so it is very important that all information is included for the judge to make the correct decision.
In the James Bulger case, as Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were only 10 years old and they could not be charged for murder at this age, the court case was postponed to the 1st of November 1993. By this time, Jon and Robert were both 11 years old therefore it was possible to charge them with murder. Jon and Robert were both found guilty of murder and were sentenced to 8 years in a young offenders institute.
This stage is very important as if the report does not contain all information and evidence or is missing crucial parts then the defendant may get a shorter sentence than they should have, or may not get any sentence at all and may be found innocent.
