Stage 7

This is the stage where the police research and analyse intelligence. They look at who is committing crimes in the community that this crime was committed in, they look at how the crimes are being committed, where and the reasoning behind why the crimes are being committed. This can help develop more leads. The police can then look at crime problems on the whole in the area or at individuals to make links between the crime problems or individuals and the crime that has been committed. These intelligence analyse's will produce both long term and short term ideas / plans of how to deal with the case.

In the James Bulger case, the police knew of boys with violent records in the area the crime had happened, knowing crime records in the area is important as if there are no leads the police can use the this as something to follow.

This type of information can be very useful in particular crimes especially abductions as if a child goes missing, intelligence can show the police the number of reported attempted abductions and the police can look into this to see if there is an area targeted or a particular car used to attempt to abduct children. If the police do not have any leads, this could be very helpful and could give the police a lead. For the James Bulger case, the police would look at young boys with violent records.
