Stage 9

This stage of the investigation is where the police identify patterns and links. They do this by sharing information they have with other police forces and agencies, such as if the police have a suspect they can contact other forces / agencies to see if they have any extra information on that person that could help with their case, such as past convictions.

The agencies the police contact depend on the crime being investigated. The police will contact the parole board or youth offending teams to see if their suspect has any links to crime. If the crime was a sexual assault, victim support agency would be contacted for support.

In cases of a serial killer, patterns can be looked at such as the victim type, the area in which the murder takes place, the weapon used and how the victim has been killed. These can be linked together to catch the criminal.

In the James Bulger case, the police will have shared their information with youth offending teams in the area. No links or patterns were found in this case.
