Stage 11

This stage of the investigate is ethical considerations. This is how the police have to take into account the use of the media and the press in investigations. In murder investigations it is extremely important that the police take into consideration how the victim's family and friends feel and if they want the media involved or not.
Ethical considerations must be considered at the beginning of the investigation so that the victim's family and friends aren't upset by the way the investigation is carried out. However, using the media can bring about more evidence and more information for the case. Press conferences can be useful by the family asking the public to come forward with any information, but this may also be upsetting for the family.

In the James Bulger case, when the CCTV footage of James and the two young boys was on the news the police received a phone call from someone who recognised the boys and this helped greatly in the investigation. The police took into consideration ethics as they decided to withhold James' injuries from the public, as they were far too severe and would have only caused the public to be even more angry and upset with what had happened.
